Kusudama Sculptures

As part of their community-based service project, a group of 21 Loras College freshman students helped the Dubuque Art Center create a critical component of our newest public art project, composed of large origami Kusudama Balls (traditional Japanese medicine balls) attached to steel support rods and anchored using heavy wooden bases. Once completed the piece, titled Healthy Wishes Floating, will be displayed at local hospitals and clinics over the next year.

(more images to come as the project nears completion)

Kusudama balls are constructed by folding and connecting more than 120 individual pieces of paper, and are traditionally used to bring health and well-being to those who come into contact with them.

The students were participating in the Launch Into Loras program, which helps entering freshman students become better connected to both the college, each other, and the Dubuque community. For more information about Loras College visit http://loras.edu.
