Community Mural 2011

This tile mosaic mural was conceived and constructed by five students in 8-10th grade as part of the 2011 Loras College Summer Academy. After learning about the role of both Crescent Community Health Center and Project Concern, these five young artists set out to create a work of art that visually expresses the impact these organizations have on our community using abstract designs and symbols.

According to the artists, the following elements are of special importance:

Tree: represents growth and shelter
Transition from light to dark: the recognition that these organizations help people in need to have better lives
Silhouettes: demonstrates both individual diversity and universal characteristics of humanity within our community
Flowing river: a integral sense of identity and connection between the people, the river represents constant evolution and change

Artists: Sarah Busta, Theresa Milazzo, Klancee Murtagh, Hayley Schaefer, Allison Schmocker

This project was made possible by the Dubuque Art Center, Loras College Summer Academy, and Gronen Properties.
